Terms of Entry Films over 40 minutes are considered features. Films that have received national U.S. network television (including cable) or theatrical release prior to Festival are not eligible. Films must be completed after 01 November 2018. US and world premieres preferred.

BluRay back up requested for DCP screenings. The possible screening formats may vary depending on the category.

Specific Characteristics The winner of the short film competition automatically qualifies for the OSCAR competition for the Best Short Film.

Evaluation The festival is one of the leading film events at the beginning of the year featuring a high percentage of films campaigning for the Academy Awards. Offering red carpet gala events and tributes to selected celebrities from the US American film business, the festival is best known for its hospitality, networking events and audience related program, especially large student population. Strong ties with entertainment industry in Los Angeles. The fest has become one of the most important stops on the annual road to the Oscars (R) (Hollywood Reporter), since many Academy members live in and around Santa Barbara.

The audience is a combination of film industry professionals, local, regional and international attendees, and a large student population.

The winner of the short film competition automatically qualifies for the OSCAR (R) competition for the Best Short Film.
