!!! COVID-19-UPDATE !!!
This year’s edition of the Locarno International Filmfestival will not take place in its normal way. Due to the COVID-19-pandemic the festival cannot be physically realized in August.
Locarno started the initiative „Locarno 2020 – For the Future of Films“, a support program for independent art-house Cinema, as an alternative to the festival. „The Films After Tomorrow“ is the first program of the initiative. 10 Swiss and 10 international projects, that got interrupted by the outbreak of the COVID-19-pandemic, will be selected to compete over a 70.000 Francs funding for the finalization of the project.
The selection will be shown during the 5 August and 15 August 2020, in the time frame, where the festival was planned to physically take place. The winners will be announced on 15 August 2020.
The Leopards of Tomorrow section, which focuses on short and medium-length works by emerging Swiss and international Talent.
Terms of Entry LOCARNO FILM FESTIVAL: Production of films and videos selected must have been completed within the 12 months preceding their Festival screening; Films and videos selected which are in competition must not have been previously released outside their country of origin nor having been shown in any international film festival prior to their official presentation at the Locarno International Film Festival; World premieres are favored. Films available on the Internet, broadcast on television or
commercially released on VOD, DVD, Blu-Ray or any other
format are not eligible. Films invited in other sections must not have been previously shown in Europe (outside their country of origin); All Swiss productions and co-productions must be world premieres. Only works over 60 minutes in length are eligible for the International Competition.
SEMAINE DE LA CRITIQUE: Eligible are documentaries or films documentary in character of at least 61 minutes running time which a) are intended for theatrical release, b) have been completed after autumn of the previous year and c) are shown as world and/or international premieres.
!!! COVID-19-UPDATE !!!
Feature film projects, that run over 70 min, are eligible for „The Films After Tomorrow“. The projects had to be planned for cinema release and must be interrupted directly by the COVID-19 outbreak, i.e. the shooting had to be planned, interrupted or finished already. In any case, the funding had to be finalized by the time of interruption.
Leopards of Tomorrow. Short and medium-length works. The submission process will remain open until June 3. The programme’s four Golden and Silver ‘Pardini’ prizes for Swiss and international entries, worth $10,000 and $5,000 respectively, will remain intact.

– Pardo per la migliore regia (Leopard for Best Direction) of the City and Region of Locarno for the best directed film: CHF 20,000 to the director; Pardo per la migliore interpretazione femminile (Leopard for Best Actress); Pardo per la migliore interpretazione maschile (Leopard for Best Actor).
Filmmakers of the present: Pardo d’oro Cineasti del presente (Cineasti del presente Golden Leopard) to the best film: CHF 35,000 to be shared equally between the director and the producer; Premio per il migliore regista emergente (Best Emerging Director Award) of the City and Region of Locarno: CHF 20,000 to the director; Premio speciale della giuria Ciné+ Cineasti del presente (Special Jury Prize): a promotional campaign to the value of CHF 25’000 on Ciné+ channels at the time of its theatrical release in France.
Moving Ahead: Moving Ahead Award to the best film (CHF 5,000 to the director); This prize may not be awarded ex aequo.

The winner of the short film competition automatically qualifies for the OSCAR competition for the Best Short Film. The jury nominates a short film from the international competition for the European Film Awards.
Evaluation Biggest film festival in Switzerland with Mediterranean flair and good opportunities to establish contacts with producers and journalists. Focus on independent and innovative cinema. Top event: open-air-screenings at the Piazza Grande for an average of 6,000 - 8,000 spectators.
The Locarno Festival has established itself in recent years as an important industry showcase for auteur filmmaking, a good networking opportunity for international distributors, buyers and producers.
