Sections Four international competitions:
a) Competition of feature films (International or World Premieres are requested.)
b) Competition of documentary films (full length). European, International or World Premieres are preferred.
c) East of the West (first & second films from Eastern Europe, tha Balkan region, Turkey and the former Soviet Union)

Non-competitive categories:
Horizons (the recent productions from around the world and prize-winning films from other festivals)
Another View (films revealing unusual artistic approaches)
Variety Critics’ Choice (ten films of the current season, which are selected by the critics of the magazine Variety)
Imagina (Films with an unconventional approach to narration and style, distinctive and radical visions of film language)

Terms of Entry Production of the film must have been completed within the twelve months prior to the starting date of the Festival.
Submitted films must not have been released anywhere in any form (including festival screenings, DVD release, or television or internet broadcast) more than twelve months prior to the starting date of the festival.
Submitted feature-lenght films must not have been screened (including festival screenings, DVD release, or television or internet broadcast) outside their country of origin before September 1, 2017 (i.e. the film did not have its international premiere before September 1, 2017).

The Festival does not accept submissions of short and medium-length films (up to 60 minutes). Any films which are solely promotional, educational or scientific in nature are not eligible for selection.

Registration Deadline The deadline for regular submissions is 28 February 2018.

The deadline for late submissions is 31 March 2018.

Fees Regular submissions: 50 €; late submissions: 65 € (feature-length fiction and documentary films), 30 € (short documentaries)

Participants of the Film Industry The Karlovy Vary IFF 2015 was attended by 12 857 accredited visitors. Of that number 10 623 had Festival Passes, 547 were filmmakers, 1017 film professionals, and 670 journalists.

Specific Characteristics Recognized by FIAPF (International Federation of Film Producers Associations) as Competitive Feature Film Festival (so-called "A-Festival").

Evaluation Karlovy Vary is the leading competition film festival in Central and Eastern Europe with large, mostly young audience that is famous for its enthusiastic commitment. Many scouts of other international festivals attend the event. A number of films are bought by international buyers and Czech distributors. The section "East of the West" is a must for foreign journalists and participants of the film industry. The festival has included "Variety's Ten European Directors To Watch", a selection of ten European films chosen by the critics of the prestigious film magazine. The section is organized and intensively promoted by the European Film Promotion (EFP).
Strong presence of the Eastern European mass media and film industry and many journalists from Western Europe who are interested in Eastern European cinema. Thanks to an easy and very friendly atmosphere good possibilities for meetings and networking.
