Specific Characteristics Recognized by FIAPF (International Federation of Film Producers Associations) as Competitive Feature Film Festival (so-called "A-Festival"). The winner of the short film competition automatically qualifies for the OSCAR competition for the Best Short Film. The jury nominates a short film from the international competition for the European Film Awards.

Evaluation Alongside Cannes and Berlin, Venice is one of the most important competitive film festivals in the world. It is the most important festival for the Italian film business, many buyers and distributors attend the event. 2012 was be the first festival edition under the direction of Alberto Barbera, who has slightly changed the profile of the festival program which gained international acclaim and he also established a "light market" at Venice.
