INTERNATIONAL PREMIERE FOR FADO IN ROTTERDAM

2016-01-22

From Max Ophüls Prize directly to Rotterdam: Jonas Rothlaender's feature film debut FADO (DE/PT, StickUp Filmproduktion, DFFB, ATARA Film) will be celebrating its international premiere in the Bright Future sidebar of the 44th Rotterdam International Film Festivals (27 January – 7 February 2016). WILD by Nicolette Krebitz (Heimatfilm) and HALAL LOVE (AND SEX) by Assad Fouladkar (DE/LB, Razor Film) will have their European premieres there. A total of 37 German films and co-productions have been invited to this important European festival which has a new director this year and has undergone a revamping of its structure.

In FADO, the young doctor Fabian (Golo Euler) fights against the impending end of his great love. He travels to Lisbon to win his ex-girlfriend Doro (Luise Heyer) back. But just as they are getting closer to each other again, their past starts catching up with them and drags them even deeper into the abyss... The graduation film by Jonas Rothlaender at the German Film & Television Academy (dffb) has its world premiere in the feature film competition of the 2016 Max Ophüls Prize Film Festival, the most important festival for young German-language cinema. FADO is nominated in Rotterdam for the Bright Future Award.

Director Burhan Qurbani – who was successful at international festivals with WE ARE YOUNG. WE ARE STRONG. – will be presenting his new project BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ at the associated co-production market CineMart. It is being produced on the German side by Sommerhaus Filmproduktion.

2016 is the first festival edition under the new director Bero Beyer with a new program structure. The program now encompasses the following sections: Bright Future for newcomer filmmakers, Voices for established directors, Deep Focus for a deeper look at the work of filmmakers with an independent oeuvre as well as Perspectives which explores cinematic conventions from various perspectives and offers a platform for other forms of media that influence cinema.
