40th Toronto International Film Festival (10 - 20 September 2015)
COLONIA and VICTORIA made a start, and the 40th Toronto International Film Festival (10 - 20 September 2015) has now announced a number of other German films to screen in its program. ONE BREATH by Christian Zübert (Senator Film, ARRI Film & TV Services, BVG Filmproduktion) and A HEAVY HEART by Thomas Stuber (DEPARTURES FILM, Deutschfilm) will both have their world premieres in the Contemporary World Cinema sidebar. Lars Kraume's THE PEOPLE VS FRITZ BAUER (zero one film, TERZ Film) will have its North American premiere there after the world premiere and Audience Award in Locarno. German Kral's OUR LAST TANGO (DE/AR, Lailaps Pictures, German Kral Filmproduktion, Schubert International) will have its world premiere in TIFF Docs. A total of 32 German films and co-productions have been programmed in Toronto so far.
It had already been announced that DER NACHTMAHR by AKIZ (OOO-Films Produktion, Bon Voyage Films) will be travelling from Locarno to Toronto and having its North American premiere in the Vanguard sidebar. EVERY THING WILL BE FINE by Wim Wenders (DE/CA/FR/SE/NO, Neue Road Movies) can be seen in the Masters.
Films from Germany can also be seen in the programs of shorts. A FIRE IN MY BRAIN THAT SEPARATES US by Benjamin Ramírez Pérez and FUGUE by Kerstin Schroedinger (DE/CA) will be screening in Wavelengths. THE FANTASTIC LOVE OF BEEBOY & FLOWERGIRL by Clemens Roth will be shown in Short Cuts International.
ONE BREATH will be the second visit in a row at the Toronto International Film Festival for director Christian Zübert after he presented TOUR DE FORCE there last year. The drama with Jördis Triebel, Benjamin Sadler and Chara Mata Giannatou in the leads sees the fates of two different women being interwoven. The young Greek woman Elena comes to Germany to earn some money and works for Thessa and Jan as a nanny for their 1 ½ year-old daughter Lotte. When Elena stops paying attention for a brief moment, the little girl disappears and Elena escapes back to Athens. Blind with grief and hatred, Thessa follows her to Greece.
A HEAVY HEART tells the story of a former GDR boxing champion, played by Peter Kurth, who has not had much luck in life since the fall of the Berlin Wall and now makes a living as a bouncer and debt collector. After collapsing on several occasions, he is told that he is suffering from terminal muscular dystrophy. He has not much time left for a final reconciliation with his daughter. A HEAVY HEART is director Thomas Stuber's feature film debut. He won a Student Oscar in 2012 for his short OF DOGS AND HORSES.
The documentary OUR LAST TANGO by German Kral, who was born in Argentina and lives in Germany, is above all a love story. A story of love between the two most famous dancers in tango's history. And a story of their tremendous love of tango. María Nieves Rego (80) and Juan Carlos Copes (83) met when they were 14 and 17 and danced together for almost 50 years. They now talk about their love, their hatred and their passion.
The Toronto International Film Festival will announce the complete program with the films for Discovery and TIFF Kids on 25 August 2015.
