WHO AM I - NO SYSTEM IS SAFE by Baran bo Odar (Wiedemann & Berg Film) and LABYRINTH OF LIES by Giulio Ricciarelli (Claussen + Wöbke + Putz, naked eye filmproduction) will have their world premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival. TOUR DE FORCE by Christian Zübert (Majestic Filmproduktion) has its North American premiere at this festival which is the most important for this region. All three films are screening – along with eight German co-productions – in the section of Contemporary World Cinema.  As previously announced, Christian Petzold's PHOENIX (Schramm Film Koerner & Weber) will have its world premiere in the Special Presentations

WHO AM I - NO SYSTEM IS SAFE, the second feature film by the director Baran bo Odar, tells the story of outsider Benjamin and the charismatic Max, who share a common interest: hacking. Together with Max's friends, they set up the subversive hacker collective CLAY that provokes with funny hacks and speaks for a whole generation. For the first time in his life, Benjamin feels as if he belongs somewhere. But when the German secret service and Europol suddenly begin investigations into CLAY, he has to acknowledge the consequences of his actions. The cast for WHO AM I - NO SYSTEM IS SAVE includes Tom Schilling, Elyas M’Barek, Wotan Wilke Möhring, Antoine Monot Jr. and Hannah Herzsprung.

Giulio Ricciarelli's LABYRINTH OF LIES with Alexander Fehling in the lead is set in 1958 during the “economic miracle” years. The horrors of the war are almost forgotten. Hardly anybody in the justice system is interested in pursuing the crimes of the National Socialists. But then the young public prosecutor Johann Radmann and his friend, the journalist Thomas Gnielka come upon documents which seriously implicate a number of former SS men who had served in Auschwitz. Johann begins investigations at the request of the State of Hesse's chief public prosecutor Dr. Fritz Bauer. But the horrors of the past and the massive resistance to his work threaten to destroy Johann's life.

The eight co-productions in Contemporary World Cinema include MEET ME IN MONTENEGRO by Alex Holdridge and Linea Saasen (DE/US/NO, Good Viking Productions, Ineke Hagedorn Film), which was predominantly shot in Berlin where both of the directors live. German actress Jennifer Ulrich can be seen in a lead role opposite Rupert Friend.

Apart from PHOENIX, the Special Presentations will feature the German co-production HECTOR AND THE SEARCH FOR HAPPINESS by Peter Chelsom (DE/CA, Egoli Tossell Film, Erfttal Film- und Fernsehproduktion, Wild Bunch Germany, Construction Film) with Veronika Ferres in the cast.

The sidebar Wavelengths, which shows avantgarde filmmaking, will be presenting the North American premiere of LE BEAU DANGER by Réne Frölke (Joon Film), a cinematic collage of a documentary portrait and texts from the Romanian author Norman Manea as well as the short SEA OF VAPORS by Sylvia Schedelbauer.

Another short will be shown in Short Cuts International: David Gesslbauer and Michael Lange (NULL) are also part of German Films' program of shorts in NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER 2014.

The TIFF Cinematheque will honor the recently deceased filmmaker Harun Farocki with a screening of his film IN COMPARISON (DE/AT, Harun Farocki Filmproduktion). Harun Farocki had collaborated intensively with Christian Petzold. Among other things, he co-wrote the screenplay for PHOENIX.
