After directing such family films as YOKO, HERE COMES LOLA! and BIBI BLOCKSBERG AND THE SECRET OF THE BLUE OWLS for the cinema, writer-director Franziska Buch has now changed track with her latest project ADIEU PARIS, which wrapped at the beginning of December.

The screenplay by Martin Rauhaus centers on two commuters traveling between Düsseldorf and Paris, investment banker Frank and best-selling novelist Patricia (played by Hans-Werner Meyer and Jessica Schwarz, respectively) who are brought together by chance at a turning point in both of their lives. Patricia is on the way to visit her French lover who is in a coma after a serious accident, while Frank is about to conclude a merger deal for the Charcuterie Albert with Swiss partners when he learns that the company had hoodwinked him with falsified accounts.

But not all is lost. Patricia finds a new friend amidst all of the sadness in her lover's wife Francoise (Sandrine Bonnaire), while Frank – to his own amazement – befriends the crooked butcher Albert (Gerard Jugnot) who is at least genuine about one thing: that the smell of his sausages are worth more than the rustle of fake bank notes.

“One of the key questions we were faced with on this project was which language the characters would speak,” producer Ralph Schwingel of Hamburg-based Wüste Film recalls. “It was clear though for me that it should be a mix of German and French with Jessica and Hans-Werner's characters both being able to speak French when they are in France.”

Schwingel points out that the richness of European acting talent is reflected in the film's casting: apart from the two German leads, ADIEU PARIS features French actress Sandrine Bonnaire – whose fiction directorial debut J'ENRAGE DE SON ABSENCE was shot at the beginning of 2011 by co-producer Iris Productions – and veteran actor Gerard Jugnot (THE CHORUS) as well as Danish actor Thure Lindhardt (FLAME & CITRON) and Luxembourg's André Jung (DER LETZTE SCHÖNE HERBSTTAG).
