Lulu & Jimi

Scene from "Lulu & Jimi" (photo © sperl+schott film GmbH)
It's the rock 'n' roll era in Germany – the lust for life and rebellion are in the air. Lulu, the daughter of a bankrupt factory owner, falls in love with a handsome but penniless black man.
The inhabitants of the conservative small town are horrified, and especially Lulu's mother tries to stir the prejudices in her friends to fight against this unwanted love affair. She orders her chauffeur, Schultz, and her doctor, von Oppeln, to do everything they can to spoil the lovers' happiness. But Lulu and Jimi won't let anybody or anything get in their way! They live and love on the run, always one step ahead of their pursuers. Until they fall into a trap ...

Oskar Roehler was born in 1959 in Starnberg, the son of husband and wife authors, Gisela Elsner and Klaus Roehler. He started his career as a screenwriter of various cinema films and directed his first feature GENTLEMAN in 1995. His film NO PLACE TO GO (DIE UNBERÜHRBARE, 2000), a very personal and sensitively told portrait of his mother, was Roehler's breakthrough. The film was awarded the German Film Award in Gold, among other awards, and Hannelore Elsner received the German Film Award for Best Actress for her role in the film. His other award-winning films include: ANGST (DER ALTE AFFE ANGST) which was in the competition at the Berlinale in 2003, AGNES AND HIS BROTHERS (AGNES UND SEINE BRÜDER) which screened in Venice, his film adaptation of Michel Houellebecq's novel of the same name ATOMISED (ELEMENTARTEILCHEN, 2006), LULU & JIMI (2008), JUD SÜSS - FILM OHNE GEWISSEN (2010), and ROOTS OF LIFE (DIE QUELLEN DES LEBENS, 2012).
