Annaluise and Anton (Puenktchen und Anton)
Annaluise has rich parents who are so busy with social obligations that they seldom have any time for her. Anton comes from a very poor background and works every evening in a little ice-cream parlour as a stand-in for his sick mother. In spite of these social differences, the two are the best of friends. In the new film version of Erich Kaestner's children's book of the same name, Annaluise isn't selling matches this time to help Anton earn some money, but is instead singing in Munich's town center while her parents are at the opera. Annaluise learnt the songs from her French aupair Laurence whom the eternally absent parents thought was the ideal chaperone for Annaluise. When Carlos, Laurence's greasy boyfriend, tries to break into Annaluise's home, Anton is, fortunately, there again and the housekeeper, big fat Berta, has a great idea....
Caroline Link was born in Bad Nauheim in 1964 and studied at the University of Television & Film in Munich. Her graduation film SOMMERTAGE (1991) won the Kodak Award at the Hof Film Festival. Her 1996 feature debut BEYOND SILENCE (JENSEITS DER STILLE) was nominated in 1998 for the Academy Award® for Best Foreign Language Film and received the Bavarian Film Award, the German Film Award in Silver and the Guild Film Award in Gold, among other commendations. Her other films include: the Erich Kästner-adaptation ANNALUISE AND ANTON (PÜNKTCHEN UND ANTON, 1999), KALLE DER TRÄUMER (TV, 1992), GLÜCK ZUM ANFASSEN (1989), BUNTE BLUMEN (1988), and the Academy Award®-winning NOWHERE IN AFRICA (NIRGENDWO IN AFRIKA, 2001) for which she also received German Film Awards for Best Film and Best Director as well as the Special Jury Prize at Karlovy Vary in 2002, and her latest feature EXIT MARRAKECH (2013).
