Wasteland (Auf der Kippe)
Life in and around Dallas, the Gypsy settlement on the edge of the rubbish dump in Cluj, Romania. I stayed for six months among their shacks with my camera. At first, they kept asking, "What is it you want to film now?", but, by the end, it was, "How will we manage without you for so long, Don Andrei?" And in between: a lot of dust; newly-born children; friendship with the 67-year-old Dica; Sonia's and Ciula's wish to go to school for the first time at the age of thirteen; the rain in July and the never-ending screening of what we'd filmed at Sia's bar; their rubbish didn't seem at all horrible on the screen. And the fact that none of them seemed anything like as dirty there as they did in real life ...

Andrei Schwartz was born in 1955 in Bucharest and emigrated to Germany in 1973. He studied Art History and Visual Communication in Hamburg and worked as a freelance art consultant for festivals and exhibitions. From 1989 on, he made news reports for radio and press on current political developments in Romania and Russia in 1990. A selection of his films includes: the TV three-parter Romania (1990), Wasteland (1997), Tales from Leper Valley (2001), and Jailbirds (Geschlossene Gesellschaft, 2005).
