Lights From Afar (Lichter aus dem Hintergrund)
Berlin, the German capital once again, a few years after the fall of the Wall. A city undergoing radical change, changing the lives of its inhabitants at the same time. A young photographer experiences this as a break in his life. He faces an uncertain, disquieting future. He feels like a stranger in his old city. What is his place in this society - whose rules he does not want to learn - just like those of the old GDR? Like his friends from the generation of the "wall children", he tries to find a new identity without losing his old one.
Helga Reidemeister was born in Halle/Saale in 1940 and received her school-leaving certificate in Cologne in 1959. She studied Fine Art at the College of Fine Arts in Berlin from 1961-1965 and was a social worker in "Maerkisches Viertel", a highrise estate on the outskirts of Berlin, from 1968-1973. She studied at the German Film & Television Academy (dffb) in Berlin from 1973-78 and began making documentaries in 1971. Her films include: Wohnste sozial, haste Qual (1971), Der gekaufte Traum (1977), Mit starrem Blick aufs Geld (1983), Drehort Berlin (1987), Aufrecht gehen, Rudi Dutschke - Spuren (1988), Im Glanze dieses Glueckes (1990), Rodina heisst Heimat (1991), Frauen in schwarz (in co-direction with Zoran Solomun, 1997), Lights From Afar (Lichter aus dem Hintergrund, 1998) and Gotteszell (2001).
