Sections Gusman Premieres: Films from world renowned directors and emerging filmmakers are showcased at the historic Gusman Center for the Performing Arts.
Dramatic Features – World Cinema Competition: Showcases the latest works of first- and second-time filmmakers from around the world.
Dramatic Features - Ibero-American Cinema Competition: Showcases features by first- and second-time filmmakers from Latin America, Spain, and Portugal.
Documentary Features - World & Ibero-American Cinema Competition: Documentary features from around the world. First- and second-time filmmakers encouraged.
International Panorama: Works from the masters and up-and-coming filmmakers from around the world who have created more than two features (World Dramatic Features, Ibero-American Dramatic Features, and Documentary Features).
Touching Florida: Dramatic and Documentary Features from Floridian filmmakers.
Career Achievement Tribute: Annual tribute honors one filmmaker each year.
Big Picture: Films that tackle world issues and the human struggle for life and dignity. Film programs include discussions and panels.
Terms of Entry Completion date must be after March 2011. Can have screened at up to 2 festivals (1 U.S. and 1 international). Must not have been publicly broadcast or exhibited commercially in the U.S prior to the Festival.
Dramatic Features in competition (World & Ibero-American categories):
-Open only to first- and second-time directors
-Must be a 2012 MIFF U.S Premiere (some exceptions granted upon approval)
-60 minutes or longer
Documentary Features in competition:
-First- and second-time directors encouraged
-2012 MIFF U.S Premiere encouraged
-50 minutes or longer
Local Filmmakers:
-One of the following must be from Florida: director, producer, writer, production company, cinematographer, editor, key talent, or location.
-Films will be considered in applicable competition categories as well as Touching Florida.
Short Films:
-Must make at least a Miami Premiere at MIFF 2012
-Under 20 minutes

Evaluation The Miami International Film Festival uses the unique geographical and cultural position of Miami to be a premiere venue for the exhibition of international and US films, with a special focus on Ibero-American cinema.
