SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT opens the 12th Festival of German Films in London (27.11. – 3.12.2009)

The Curzon Soho Cinema in London's West End will again be the meeting place for lovers of German cinema in the runup to Christmas this year. German Films will be showing for the 12th year in a row a wide selection of new German feature films, documentaries and short film productions.

The new film by Detlev Buck, SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT, which was awarded the Variety Piazza Grande Award in Locarno, will open the festival in the presence of the director and the lead actor David Kross.

The feature film program will this year present: EVERYONE ELSE (ALLE ANDEREN, Maren Ade), ANONYMA – A WOMAN IN BERLIN (ANONYMA – EINE FRAU IN BERLIN, Max Faerberboeck), BERLIN ´36 (Kaspar Heidelbach), GERMANY 09 (DEUTSCHLAND 09, div), EFFI BRIEST (Hermine Huntgeburth), PEACEFUL TIMES (FRIEDLICHE ZEITEN, Neele Leana Vollmar), HILDE (Kai Wessel), JOHN RABE (Florian Gallenberger), LULU & JIMI (Oskar Roehler), LONG SHADOWS (SCHATTENWELT, Connie Walther), STORM (STURM, Hans-Christian Schmid) and the young people's film THE CROCODILES (VORSTADTKROKODILE, Christian Ditter).

The documentary program has lined up: ALIAS (Jens Junker), GERMAN SOULS - LIFE AFTER THE COLONIA DIGNIDAD (DEUTSCHE SEELEN – LEBEN NACH DER COLONIA DIGNIDAD, Matthias Zuber, Martin Farkas), GERDA'S SILENCE - SURVIVING THE ANGEL OF DEATH (GERDAS SCHWEIGEN, Britta Wauer), BASTION OF SIN (HOCHBURG DER SUENDEN, Thomas Lauterbach) and THE MIRACLE OF LEIPZIG (DAS WUNDER VON LEIPZIG, Sebastian Dehnhardt, Matthias Schmidt).

Apart from the short film program of NEXT GENERATION 2009, German Films will be showing other outstanding shorts: GISELA (Katja Baumann), THE GREEN SHEEP (DAS GRUENE SCHAF, Carsten Strauch), THE LAST WHEEL (DAS LETZTE RAD, Olaf Held), MAMA L’CHAIM! (Elkan Spiller) und MY FIRST WEDDING (MEINE ERSTE HOCHZEIT, Ralf Kukula).

In collaboration with Vision Kino and the British organisation Film Education, BERLIN ´36 and EFFI BRIEST will be shown in special screenings for British schoolchildren with an introduction to the film and in-depth discussions with the directors.

The Goethe Institut in London will be honouring ROMY SCHNEIDER at the same time with a large selection of films. SISSI (Ernst Marischka) and GIRLS IN UNIFORM (MAEDCHEN IN UNIFORM, Leontine Sagan) and the later adaptation of the same name with Romy Schneider by Géza von Radványi will be shown during the festival.
