Girl Called Rosemarie, A (Maedchen Rosemarie, Das (1996))

Girl Called Rosemarie, A
Scene from "A Girl Called Rosemarie"

Rosemarie Nitribitt, a pretty girl in her early twenties who dreams of a life in "fine society", earns a living as a hostess in a third-class nightclub. One evening, she gets to know the rich businessmann Hartog who soon succumbs to her seductive charms. Convinced that she is now on the way up, she moves into a little flat that Hartog secretly pays for. Rosemarie's dream of a future together with Hartog is shattered when she finds out about his fiancée Christine. She then meets the French businessman Fribert who makes her a proposition: he will make Rosemarie into the perfect lady in return for her making tape recordings in bed of the German parvenus of the economic upswing. Rosemarie has them all: industrialists, ministers, nobility. When Fribert feels that the time has come to blackmail the "big fish", she realises that she has only been a cheap tool. In desperation, she refuses to hand the tapes over to Fribert and negotiates about them directly with Hartog. She demands that he marry her for the tapes. But Hartog refuses ...

Bernd Eichinger was born in 1949 and studied Direction and Production Management at Munich's Academy for Television & Film (HFF/M). He founded Solaris Filmproduktion in 1974 and became the president and main shareholder of the Constantin Group in 1979. As a distributor, his releases have included Christiane F (Christiane F - Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo, 1981), The Boat (Das Boot, 1981), The Neverending Story (Die unendliche Geschichte, 1984) and The Name of the Rose (Der Name der Rose, 1986). His production arm pursues a two-track strategy, developing high-profile, big-budget projects for the international market and films for the German domestic market. His films as a director include A Girl Called Rosemarie (Das Maedchen Rosemarie, 1997) and The Great Bagarozy (Der grosse Bagarozy, 1999).
